Large SUVs are great for growing families. They offer comfortable seating but still have plenty of room for storage. Among the vehicles, under this segment, the 2019 Volvo XC60 and the 2019 Toyota Highlander ranks high. They both have an impeccable reputation for safety, technology and performance so it would be fun to compare these vehicles.

Design & Style

The XC40 is designed to be comfortable even for the driver. The award-winning aerodynamic shape is featured with smooth curves and an athletic stance. Its Thor's hammer headlights are the iconic feature that gives it a stronger character on the outside.

While the Highlander received praises for a lovely exterior, it failed to have a pleasant exterior. It has a protruding snout that do not complement the rest of the well-proportioned style features. It also earned a lot of disapproval for having a razor-sharp grille that looks uninviting on a huge SUV.

Technology & Safety

The XC60 is designed not only to be comfortable but also to entertain. Its innovative infotainment features include the Harman Kardon audio system for premium-quality audio. Aside from an accurate voice-control system, it also comes with a 9-inch Sensus touchscreen display to access the audio and navigation systems. The advanced driver aids were added to help improve protection against impending crashes.

The XC60 has a lot to offer but the Highlander is not far behind. Its nav system is easy to use although not as accurate as most competitive vehicles. The dials and controls are redundant as everything can also be controlled using the touchscreen display. Most of its driver aids are also standard but the lane departure system is not too accurate if the lanes are not marked clearly.

Performance

The XC60 has a superb performance because of its 2.0L turbocharged engine that can deliver up to 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The sufficient thrust from the engine gives no problem with speeding up. The car is consistently stable, thanks to the well-modulated brake system.

The base engine of the Highlander is a 2.5- liter four-cylinder with 185 hp and 184 lb-ft. While it is already a strong engine, it tends to be lazy to respond when maximum acceleration is not met. The steering is too light and is noticeably less responsive. Overall, its performance is on the average compared to the superior agility of the XC60.

The Bottom Line

The 2019 Toyota Highlander may have the size to comfortably haul a huge group but it lacks the finesse of a true luxury vehicle. Its exterior features are not too becoming compared to its nice interior. The infotainment is good but the redundant controls made it look outdated. As for the 2019 Volvo XC60, it does not only do the task as a family hauler impressively well but it also has impressive technology and superb performance too.
