The 2021 Volvo S60 is sought after for its sprightly appearance, excellent powertrains and turbo engine. How does it compare to the 2021 Audi A4, a car with a crisp interior, impressive off-road capability and lots of safety gear?

Design & Style

The latest Audi A4 sedan is sharper than previous editions, with more creases, a larger grille and wheels arches which are more flared. The interior is organized and pristine, with digital displays that have replaced the buttons found in older models. Leather comes standard on every variant, and it looks great with the aluminum and wood accents.

The Volvo S60 continues the classy minimalism that has made the brand famous. It has a toned exterior with LEDs in front and taillights which are shaped like the letter C. The cabin looks best in lighter tones, and is wonderful without being too ritzy. On the outside, it has overhangs which have been shortened with prominent fenders and a nose that has been extended. The frame sits on eighteen inch wheels.

Technology & Safety

The Volvo S60 is one of the safest cars in its class. It has captured the coveted Top Safety Pick award and its protective measures include emergency automated brakes that come standard, headlights which are adaptive, the ability to monitor blind spots and lane control which is active. The Pilot Assist allows drivers to briefly remove their hands from the steering wheel, and its outward vision is outstanding. Amenities inside its cabin include nine inch displays, sunroof, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, parking sensors, and audio from Harman Kardon.

The Audi A4 has earned a 5 star federal safety rating. It has many of the protective features found in the Volvo, and has also attained the Top Safety Pick award. It has a system that will keep the car in the right lane without shifting from one side to another, and can alleviate driver fatigue.  Its cabin perks include ten inch displays, powered seats that can be cooled or heated, a digitized instrument cluster and camera with surround view.

The Audi A4 is outfitted with an engine that can generate 201 horsepower, that is wedded to an automatic seven speed transmission with all-wheel drive. The Volvo S60 is equipped with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 250 horsepower that is wedded to an automatic eight speed transmission with front wheel drive.

The Bottom Line

While both cars are impressive and well appointed, the Volvo has a distinct performance advantage, and the trunk in the Audi A4 is cramped and its seven speed sometimes hesitates at lower velocity, making the Volvo S60 the winner.
