The 2021 Volvo S60 offers a lot to drivers, including potent engines, state of the art tech and a gorgeous interior. How does it stack up against the 2021 BMW 3 Series, a responsive car with powerful engines of its own, the latest wireless technology and superb handling?

Design & Style

The BMW 3 Series is a sedan which is both compact and sporty. Its body kits are chunky with an interior dashboard that has been slightly lowered and augmented by multiple digitized displays. The surfaces are covered in quality materials such as aluminum and wood and illumination is provided by ambient lights. The Volvo S60 has five seats with four doors and incorporates the minimalist style that the brand has become known for. The exterior is athletic and toned, with excellent proportions, LED lights in front and taillights which are C-shaped. The cabin is covered in swanky materials such as leather and wood which are light in tone and easy on the eyes.

Technology & Safety

The IIHS is very impressed with the Volvo S60, so much so that it has given it the prestigious Top Safety Pick award. It has an extensive list of countermeasures, such as lane control, emergency automated brakes, headlights which are adaptive, blind area monitoring and Pilot Assist, which allows drivers to take their hands away from the steering while the car operates itself for a set distance.

The outward vision is also excellent, which is the result of the small roof pillars and large windows. Luxuries within the cabin include a sunroof, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, nine inch touchscreens, a camera with surround view and sound delivered by Harman Kardon.  The BMW 3 Series has also earned the Top Safety Pick award. It has many of the same safety features found in the Volvo S60, including systems designed to alleviate driver fatigue during long journeys. Luxuries within its cabin include seats made from carbon fiber, climate control, power seats and windows and premium audio.

Performance

The BMW 3 Series is extremely dynamic. It is equipped with a turbo 4 engine that can generate 255 horsepower that is wedded to an automatic eight speed transmission. Those that desire even more power can upgrade. The Volvo S60 is also equipped with a turbo 4 engine that is 2 liter and capable of generating 250 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from zero to sixty in just six seconds.

The Bottom Line

The Volvo S60 and BMW 3 Series are both so well designed that they're almost tied. However, the BMW 3 Series doesn't offer a manual option or wagon variant, making the Volvo S60 the winner.
