The 2021 Volvo S60 is considered by many to be the premiere luxury mid-sized car. Its world class seats, hybrid plugin and turbo engine make it irresistible to many buyers. But how does it compare to the 2021 Cadillac CT4, a swanky car that is packed with outstanding tech, a ten speed automated gearbox and turbo engines of its own?

Design & Style

Cadillac wrote the manual on style. The CT4 front lights are slightly pinched and swept back with larger wheels beneath that add the perfect flair. The cabin is regal in every respect, with controls that are readily accessible and digital displays that are bright, high definition and positioned well. The exterior lines are conservative and crisp, with a roofline that is low and a chassis that is balanced.  The Volvo S60 masters the difficult task of being luxurious without the ostentatious display that is so common in other similarly priced vehicles. The exterior is athletic and toned, with C shaped lights in back and LEDs in front. The cabin is covered in a beautiful wooden light tone and leather which feels wonderful on the skin.

Technology & Safety

The Volvo S60 is so well equipped with safety features that it captured the coveted Top Safety Pick award. Many of these features come standard on all variants, such as lane control and emergency automatic brakes. Other countermeasures include blind area monitoring and adaptive lights. Pilot Assist aids the driver, allowing them to remove their hands from the steering wheel briefly to tend to other tasks while keeping the vehicle in control. Cabin perks include Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, nine inch touchscreens, sunroof and sound system from Harman Kardon. The Cadillac CT4 is rich in collision prevention tech. Automated emergency brakes are also standard, with additional tools designed to alleviate driver fatigue over long distances. Cabin perks include climate control, infotainment and powered seats.

Performance

The Cadillac CT4 is formidable, with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can produce 237 horsepower with 258 pounds of torque. It is also equipped with an eight speed automatic. The Volvo S60 counters with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine of its own that can generate 250 horsepower. It is also outfitted with an eight speed automatic, and can blaze from zero to sixty in approximately six seconds.

The Bottom Line

Despite the fact that these two cars are extremely close when it comes to performance, interior amenities and safety features, the back seat of the Cadillac CT4 is too tight, which is unacceptable given the price tag, so the Volvo S60 wins.
