The 2021 Volvo S60 has earned praise due to its wonderful seats, hybrid plugin and Scandinavian minimalist style. But can it compete with the likes of the 2021 Lexus IS, a fast, sleek and opulent vehicle with enhanced infotainment, superb handling and outstanding safety tech?

Design & Style

The Lexus IS has a sporty exterior with an hourglass mesh grille, LED lights and muscular hood. The side mirrors and air intakes below complete the look, as do the side creases and deck lid. Within the cabin passengers will be presented with a dashboard that is horizontal with circular vents and various buttons and dials which are situated in all the right places. The Volvo S60 has a gorgeous exterior of its own, which is perfectly proportioned with seats that are thick and comfortable. They will adjust to the form of anyone who sits in them, and leather coverings look and feel the best. The cabin provides more than 35 inches of space for the legs, which makes it ideal even for taller passengers.

Technology & Safety

The Volvo S60 has captured the coveted Top Safety Pick award due to its protective capabilities. These include automated emergency brakes which are standard, cruise and lane control, pilot assist and headlights which are adaptive. But passengers don't just want to be protected, they want to be comforted, and the S60 does this with nine inch touchscreens, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, sunroof and a camera with surround view.

The Lexus IS has also earned a Top Safety Pick award of its own, with high marks for its crash prevention tech. These include automatic notifications for back cross traffic, high beams which are automated and the ability to detect pedestrians, nearby vehicles and other objects. Luxuries within its cabin include eight inch touchscreens, voice commands, Amazon Alexa, powered seats and climate control.

Performance

The Lexus IS has a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 241 horsepower, which enables it to blaze from zero to sixty in about 7 seconds. The Volvo S60 is also outfitted with a turbo 4 engine that is 2 liter and capable of generating 250 horsepower, that works in conjunction with front wheel drive and an eight speed automatic transmission. It can accelerate from zero to sixty in under six seconds.

The Bottom Line

Everything that the Lexus IS does, the Volvo does better. The S60 has faster acceleration times, larger touchscreens and the Lexus is mired by recycled powertrains and a back seat that is too tight, which is unacceptable for a car in its price range, making the S60 the winner.
