The 2021 Volvo S60 is a fabulous car with many desirable characteristics, such as a turbo engine, relaxing seats, hybrid plugin and a wide range of safety features. But what happens when it goes up against the 2021 Tesla Model 3, an electric car which has taken the world by storm due to its futuristic looks, sporty handling, and supercharger network?

Design & Style

Unlike most cars in its class, the Tesla Model 3 does not feature a grille. It is also devoid of an engine beneath the hood, which gave its designers more flexibility. The roofline arch is smooth and tapers along the sides, and the door handles feature elegant accents with a rear end that is tall and reminiscent of a hatchback. The cabin forgoes most standard dials and buttons, so that the driver is presented only with a steering wheel, two wheel gauges and a fifteen inch touchscreen. The Volvo S60 is more conventional with an exterior that pays homage to muscle cars of the past. Its overhangs are short, with an extended nose and fenders which are prominent and which encapsulate eighteen inch alloy wheels. It has a vertical bar style grille with LED lights and an interior wrapped in leather with drift wood trim.

Technology & Safety

The Volvo S60 is the recipient of the Top Safety Pick award, and this is due to its many safety countermeasures such as emergency automatic brakes, lane control, adaptive headlights, blind area monitoring and pilot assist, which is so advanced that drivers can disengage from its steering and allow the car to guide itself for a few moments. Cabin perks include nine inch touchscreens, sunroof, camera with surround view and audio from Harman Kardon. The Tesla Model 3 has also captured the Top Safety Pick award, as well as a five star NHTSA rating. It has many of the same safety features as the S60, including superb outward vision, autopilot, radars and various other sensors to allow the car to operate autonomously.

Performance

The Tesla Model 3 is one of the fastest cars on the market today. Base models can accelerate from zero to sixty in approximately 5.3 seconds, and it produces the equivalent of 450 horsepower. The Volvo S60 T8 answers with a 415 horsepower engine that allows it to go from zero to sixty in less than sixty seconds.

The Bottom Line

Both of these cars are stunning and well matched across many metrics. However, those who have test driven the Tesla Model 3 have complained that it makes excessive road noise and the materials are unimpressive for the price tag, so the Volvo S60 wins.
