The 2021 Volvo S90 never ceases to impress. From its lovely exterior to the standardized safety features and performance, it has everything you could want in a car. But how does it stack up against the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon, a stylish vehicle with lots of cargo space, comfortable seats and advanced instrument cluster?

Design & Style

The Volkswagen Arteon has a lower roof with an extended wheelbase and rear window which slopes, giving it a fastback appearance. A light bar has been added which binds the VW insignia to the LED lights in front, and it has a clamshell style hood and slotted grill which extends to its air intakes. The cabin looks fantastic with its black touch panels, carbon fiber and chrome. The Volvo S90 is designed to comfortably carry 5 adults, and does so with style. The front seats in particular have received praise due to their nappa leather, back support and ventilation. Passengers get more than forty inches worth of leg room and some variants have back seats which can be folded down to provide more space.

Technology & Safety

The Volvo S90 is well equipped to protect its passengers from a variety of threats. It does this through blind area monitoring, cruise control which is adaptive, automated emergency brakes, airbags for every passenger and driver assist. It also has a camera with surround view and can help you park automatically. Luxuries within its cabin include Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, nine inch displays, panoramic sunroof and powered seats.

The Volkswagen Arteon has won an IIHS Top Safety Pick award, due to its ability to automatically detect pedestrians, emergency automatic brakes, and a unique mechanism where the hood will automatically raise if an inevitable collision is detected to minimize head trauma. Luxuries in its cabin include seats that can be powered twelve ways, climate control which covers three zones, eight inch touchscreens and a ten inch instrument cluster.

The Volkswagen Arteon has a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 268 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from zero to sixty in about six seconds. The Volvo S90 is also equipped with a turbo 4 that is 2 liter and capable of generating 250 horsepower, that will carry it from zero to sixty in the same time frame.

The Bottom Line

Though the S90 and Arteon are tied when it comes to acceleration time, the Volkswagen has a cramped console, some have encountered issues using its gear shift and it has smaller infotainment screens, making Volvo the winner.
