The 2021 Jaguar E-Pace is a well-designed SUV in every respect. Its playful handling, roomy interior and torque vectoring make it a cut above the rest. But is it good enough to compete with the 2021 Volvo XC40, an SUV which has received acclaim for its powertrains, style and fully electric version?

Design & Style

The Volvo XC40 has an angular, sporty exterior with a cabin that is comfortable even when driving long distances. Leather trim comes standard, and even passengers in the rear seat will have plenty of space for their head and legs. Those that need to carry luggage will be pleased to know that the cargo area offers twenty one cubic feet worth of space, which can be increased to forty cubes when the seats are folded down. The Jaguar E-Paces looks sharp from virtually every angle, with J shaped lights, curvy side profile and twenty inch wheels. The cabin is very driver oriented, with a panel covered in leather trim which is separate from the passenger area. The material quality is high overall, but hard plastic appears in some places.

Technology & Safety

The Jaguar E-Pace is equipped with all the latest safety tech, such as lane and cruise control which is active, parking sensors, emergency automated brakes and the ability to automatically recognize traffic signs. Drivers will also receive assistance when parking, and amenities within the cabin include ten way power seats, ten inch infotainment screens and the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The Volvo XC40 does an outstanding job of preventing accidents before they occur. It accomplishes this through emergency automatic brakes, LED lights which will dim automatically if traffic is detected nearby, multiple airbags and a reinforced frame, all of which earned it a five star rating from the NHTSA. Its cabin luxuries include audio from Harman Kardon, moonroof, navigational systems, driftwood inlays and climate control.

The Volvo XC40 offers the option of all-wheel drive which gives it zippy handling. It is equipped with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate up to 248 horsepower. The Jaguar E-Pace is also equipped with the turbo 4, 2 liter engine, which allows it to generate 246 horsepower with 269 pounds of torque. It can accelerate from zero to sixty in approximately 6.7 seconds.

The Bottom Line

Choosing between the Jaguar and Volvo is no easy task, until you take a closer look under the hood. Some of the materials used in the Jaguar are questionable, especially given its price tag, and many drivers have stated that the engine sounds too rough and the transmission is confusing, so the Volvo XC40 wins.
