The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is moderately sized yet packed with all sorts of goodies. From its iconic appearance to its excellent powertrains and gadgetry, this vehicle has lots to offer. But how does it fair against the 2021 Volvo XC40, an opulent crossover that has received acclaim for its style, handling and fully electric variant?

Design & Style

The Volvo XC40 is about 174 inches in length, with a heightened dash inside that features a nine inch displays. The default black and beige trim looks wonderful, but the Oxide Red is fabulous. There is plenty of space for passengers and luggage, and the seats are well sculpted with lots of support for the back. Storage areas can be found near the central console, door panel or dash, which makes it easy to keep track of small goods.

The newest Jeep Wrangler hasn't changed much from previous editions, and it doesn't need to. The fenders and taillights have been revised, yet maintain the same rugged look that made it famous. The cabin does feature better technology and ergonomics, with a dashboard that has been lowered to improve outward vision.

Technology & Safety

The IIHS has given the Jeep Wrangler good scores for the majority of its impact tests, with the exception of the overlap driver side exam, where it got a marginal score. The thing to understand about this vehicle is that it lacks active safety functions which come standard. It received a four star rating from the NHTSA and perks within its cabin include eight inch displays, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, air conditioning and power windows.

The Volvo XC40 has received a perfect five star NHTSA rating, along with a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS. It has both active and standard safety features, which include LEDs which will dim automatically when oncoming traffic is detected, emergency automated brakes, and multiple airbags. Luxuries within its cabin include parking sensors, panoramic moonroof, sound system from Harmon Kardon and beautiful driftwood inlays.

Those that purchase the Volvo XC40 T5 will get a turbo 4 engine that can generate 248 horsepower with all-wheel drive. The engine is connected to an automatic eight speed gear box. The Jeep Wrangler comes with a V6, 3.8 liter engine that can generate 285 horsepower with 260 pounds of torque.

The Bottom Line

While the Jeep Wrangler may have ample horsepower, this is negated by its poor safety features and scores. Furthermore, those who have test driven it have stated that the Wrangler is not very comfortable, and since safety and comfort are paramount for families, the Volvo XC40 is the better choice.
