The 2021 Volvo XC40 is a well-appointed sport utility vehicle. Its powertrains, style, and fully electric variant have made it very popular with consumers. But can it compete against the 2021 Nissan Rogue, a handsome SUV with clever storage, standardized safety features and formidable handling?

Design & Style

The Rogue is a compact style SUV with an impressive exterior. The hood features a grille that is V shaped, with a taller and wider frame than previous generations. It has multiple LED lights which are split with high beams that are automated and some run during the daytime. The rear pillars are blacked out and buyers have the option of 17 or 19 inch wheels. While the cabin is impressive with its metallic surfaces and contrasting colors, it has fake wooden trim. The XC40 is also compact, with lovely upholstery that is black and beige in color. Buyers have the option of multiple wheel types and the cabin sports an elevated dashboard with a nine inch touchscreen.

Technology & Safety

An ideal vehicle is one that prevents most accidents before they occur, and the XC40 does well in this regard. It has revised LED lights that will dim automatically should they detect oncoming traffic, and the vehicle also has excellent outward vision, automated emergency brakes, multiple airbags and a host of other countermeasures which have earned it a stellar 5 star NHTSA rating. Luxuries within its cabin include a Harman Kardon sound system, driftwood inlays, panoramic moonroof, and navigational systems.

The IIHS gave the Nissan Rogue the Top Safety Pick award, and it has a four star rating from the NHTSA. It is outfitted with most of the features found in the Volvo, including pedestrian detection, blind area monitoring, automated emergency brakes and back door alerts. Luxuries within its cabin include eight inch touchscreens, two USB ports, eight way power seats, keyless entry and a camera with surround view.

Performance

The Volvo XC40 is equipped with an inline 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 181 horsepower with 181 pounds of torque. This allows it to reach sixty miles per hour in approximately 9 seconds. The Volvo XC40 is equipped with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 187 horsepower. It has great thrust and works well with the eight speed automated gear box.

The Bottom Line

Though essentially tied when it comes to performance, the Volvo edges out the Nissan Rogue due to its larger screens and superior cargo space, and unlike the Rogue, which uses fake wood, the wooden trim found in Volvo is real, making it the winner.
