The 2021 Volvo XC60 is a handsome sport utility vehicle with a comfortable cabin, the choice of 3 powertrains and award winning safety features. But is this enough to beat the 2021 BMW X4, an SUV that comes with dual engine choices, is fun to drive, and has superb engineering?

Design & Style

The BMW X4 is compact and closely related to the X3. However it distinguishes itself with the sloping roofline in back that gives it a rakish appearance and it is powered by a four cylinder engine with the option of an inline six turbo. Its newest features include support for Android Auto, satellite radio from SiriusXM and numerous optional packages. While the base model has the best fuel economy, those who upgrade to Premium will get a host of additional amenities.

The Volvo XC60 is also compact yet lavish, with supercharged and turbocharged performance. Its newest features for the year include LED based headlights, wireless charging for smartphones, mirrors that dim automatically and the choice of nineteen inch wheels with parking sensors. AM radio has been phased out in favor of TuneIn, which is part of its infotainment system, and the exterior mirrors can power fold.

Technology & Safety

The Volvo XC60 captured the prestigious Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, as well as a five star NHTSA rating. It is equipped with every modern safety feature known to man, including automated emergency brakes, lane management, and the ability to detect pedestrians, cruise control which is adaptive and semi-autonomous operation. Luxuries within the cabin include built in navigation, a rear lift gate that is power operated, leather upholstery, climate control that covers four zones and an audio system from Harmon Kardon.

The BMW X4 is equipped with most of the safety features found in the Volvo XC60, such as adaptive cruise control, emergency automated brakes, frontal impact alerts and lane management. Luxuries within its cabin include an audio system with twelve speakers, ten inch infotainment screens, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with leather upholstery.

Performance

The most powerful X4 offered by BMW is the M40i, which is turbocharged and capable of generating 382 horsepower with 365 pounds of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to sixty in just 4.2 seconds. The most powerful XC60 offered by Volvo is the T8 Polestar, which can generate 415 horsepower.

The Bottom Line

Despite being advertised as being superior to the BMW X3, the X4 actually has fewer spaces for cargo, which is a downgrade, and this combined with its tight rear space and inferior horsepower makes the Volvo XC60 the winner.
