The 2021 Volvo XC60 is a magnificent SUV. The option of all or front wheel drive, its choice of power trains and safety features are all world class. But how does it stack up against the 2021 GMC Terrain, an imposing SUV with Denali level opulence, excellent infotainment and superb handling?

Design & Style

The GMC Terrain has a sleek and modern appearance with a capacious grille, square headlights and a wagon style frame. Its pillar is blacked out and seems to float; a visual illusion which was created by the engineers. Within the cabin, passengers will be presented with hefty displays and push toggle controls for the transmission, along with leather and wooden trim. The Volvo XC60 presents a calm and collected presence with a luxurious undertone and proportions that are absolutely immaculate. The cabin is minimalist yet classy with light colored leather and driftwood which is pleasing to the eyes. The outer frame has an upright stance with lines that are well rounded.

Technology & Safety

The Volvo XC60 has the highest safety honors that a vehicle can receive, including a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and five stars rating from the NHTSA. This is because it is packed with all the latest countermeasures like parking sensors, a camera with surround view, steering assist, automated emergency brakes and cruise control which is adaptive. Comforts within its cabin include twelve inch digital gauge clusters, power lift gate, keyless start, powered seats, nappa leather and climate control which covers four zones.

The GMC Terrain also earned a five star NHTSA rating, but was not good enough to qualify for the Top Safety Pick. This is due to its headlights, which are less than desirable, but it does have a camera with surround view, emergency automated brakes and cruise control which is adaptive. Luxuries that can be found within its cabin include dual USB ports, seven inch displays, Bluetooth support, remote start and keyless ignition.

GMC is famous for the performance of its SUVs, and the Terrain is no exception.  It is equipped with a turbo 4, 1.5 liter engine that can generate 170 horsepower with 203 pounds of torque. The Volvo XC60 comes with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 250 horsepower that is connected to an automatic eight speed transmission.

The Bottom Line

Despite being similar in price, the Volvo XC60 outclasses the GMC Terrain in almost every way. Its base engine is vastly more powerful, it has better safety credentials, and the GMC has an all-wheel drive which has annoyed some drivers, its gas mileage is average, and it can barely seat five comfortably, making the XC60 the winner.
