The 2021 Lexus GX is highly regarded for its rugged demeanor, standardized safety tech and respectable towing ability. Can it compete with the 2021 Volvo XC60, a vehicle which many consider a princely SUV due to its potent powertrains, commanding style and optional all electric version?

Design & Style

The Volvo XC60 is sporty on the outside and well composed on the inside, with gorgeous black and beige upholstery. The frame is approximately 174 inches from bumper to bumper, which means it is quite compact and will fit into places that larger SUVs would find difficult. However, the cabin is nice and roomy and there is plenty of space for cargo, and the seats provide excellent support for the back and hips. The rugged exterior displayed by the Lexus GX makes it clear that this SUV was designed for off-road duties. It has a massive grille with a bulky frame and fender flares which bulge, with nineteen inch alloy wheels and a darker finish. The cabin is classy and comfortable with glossy wood, supple leather and dashboard controls which are readily accessible.

Technology & Safety

The Lexus GX is as tough as nails. Aside from the reinforced outer shell, passengers will be protected by frontal impact warnings, emergency automatic brakes, high beam automatic lights and the ability to detect pedestrians. Comforts within the cabin include cooled/heated seats, navigational systems, premium audio from Mark Levinson, adaptive suspension and authentic leather seats. The Volvo XC60 has done a wonderful job on its crash tests, receiving top marks from the IIHS. It has many of the safety features found in the GX, including blind area monitoring, the ability to detect road signs automatically, driver assist, multiple airbags and thick roof pillars. Luxuries within the cabin include keyless ignition, Bluetooth support, power lift gate, seats covered in nappa leather and navigational system.

The Volvo XC60 is equipped with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can produce up to 250 horsepower, that is wedded to an electric motor and eight speed automatic transmission. The Lexus GX is powered by a V8 4.6 liter engine that can generate up to 301 horsepower with the ability to tow a maximum of 6,500 pounds. Its engine works in conjunction with an automatic six speed transmission.

The Bottom Line

Although the Lexus GX has a big and powerful engine with impressive towing capability, its fuel economy is lousy, the third row is cramped and the handling has been compared to a truck, which isn't that desirable, so the Volvo XC60 is the winner.
