The 2021 Volvo XC60 has 4 dynamic powertrains, a wonderful interior, and advanced safety and infotainment features. How does it fair against the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas, an SUV which offers lots of room, excellent powertrains of its own and outstanding tech?
Design & Style
The Volkswagen Atlas is a moderately sized cross over which offers two or three rows. It has been revised with a bumper that dips lower and chrome that is curvier than before. Along the sides it is exceptionally angular with some creases near the fenders and doors. The rear features raised letters which extend across the tailgate. The cabin features a broad and horizontal dash with colorful upholstery. The Volvo XC60 is a good looking vehicle with adequate space for passengers and cargo. It has an upright stance which is ideal for taller passengers and the seats are thickly padded, offering excellent support to the back and spine. Not only can they be heated or cooled depending on the season, these seats can also provide a back massage.
Technology & Safety
Few SUVs have earned both a Top Safety Pick award and 5 star NHTSA rating, but the Volvo XC60 is one of them. It has an array of safety countermeasures, including steering assist, parking sensors, camera with surround view, blind area monitoring and emergency automated brakes. Comforts within its cabin include a digitized gauge cluster which is 12.3 inches in size, keyless start, and leather upholstery. Audio is provided courtesy of Bowers and Wilkins.
The Volkswagen Atlas also received stellar reviews from the NHTSA and IIHS, though not enough to win the Top Safety Pick. Though it is equipped with most of the countermeasures found in the Volvo, its headlights received a marginal grade. It does offer assistance with traffic jams, which is indispensable in large and congested urban areas, and comforts within its cabin include climate control which covers three zones, remote start, eight inch touchscreens, panoramic sunroof, and charger for wireless smartphones.
Performance
The Volkswagen Atlas is powered by a V6, 3 liter engine that can generate 276 horsepower which is wedded to an automatic eight speed transmission. The Volvo XC60 counters with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 250 horsepower, that is also wedded to an automatic eight speed with the option of all wheel drive.
The Bottom Line
Both of these SUVs are well designed. However, the Volkswagen Atlas lacks the safety credentials of the Volvo due to its subpar headlights, the touchscreens are small and it isn't very fuel efficient, making the XC60 the winner.
