Many SUV enthusiasts consider the Volvo XC90 to be the emperor of sport utility vehicles. Its spectacular presentation, premium build quality and performance make it a vehicle that is desired by many. But what happens when it goes up against the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, a vehicle which has demolished most of its competitors due its incredible performance, comfort, and off-road handling?

Design & Style

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a moderately sized crossover that has three rows and strong stylistic cues. Its proportions are simply magnificent, with trapezoidal shaped wheel arches, a grille with 7 slots and an elevated posture. The fenders have been widened with exhausts that bellow and lots of wood and chrome in the cabin. Passengers will be treated to large touchscreens with soft leather seats.

The Volvo XC90 is pristine and crisp, with a unique style that is all its own. It uses the same light signature as previous editions with tasteful creases and elegant lines here and there. The interior is serene and relaxing, with none the glitz found in other vehicles. The wooden trim is open pore and passengers will have plenty of space and access to high definition displays.

Technology & Safety

Volvo is one of the safest brands in the automobile industry. Each of their vehicles has received the highest safety accolades and this includes the XC90, which is the recipient of a Top Safety Pick and five stars NHTSA rating. It has lane and cruise control, blind area monitoring, steering assist and parking sensors. Passengers in the cabin will be treated to a variety of amenities, which include nine inch displays, power tail gate, perforated leather, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, and charging for wireless smartphones.

Safety scores for the Jeep Grand Cherokee have been mixed. The 4 wheel drive variant did receive a 5 star rating but only four stars for rollover and frontal impact. The IIHS described its overlap collision protection as being marginal with protection on the passenger side being called poor. Amenities within its cabin include dual USB ports, powered seats, eight inch displays, power lift gate and the option of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is outfitted with a V6, 3.6 liter engine that can generate 295 horsepower.  Those that purchase the Volvo XC90 T6 will get an engine that can generate 316 horsepower with 295 pounds of torque.

The Bottom Line

When an SUV is designed, there are lots of things that can be sacrificed, including power, luxury or customization options. But there can be no compromises when it comes to safety, and since this is the case with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Volvo XC90 wins.
