The 2021 Lincoln Aviator is an extravagant SUV with prominent infotainment displays, a lovely Black Label cabin, and enough space to comfortably seat four. But can it compete with the 2021 Volvo XC90, a vehicle with a gorgeous exterior, swanky interior, and a distinguished safety record?
Design & Style
The Volvo XC90 has a very attractive presentation. The outer body is classy yet minimalistic and free of the bling and chrome which is found on other sport utility vehicles. The cabin is truly elegant, with wooden trim that has been white washed and leather that is neutral. A tablet like screen can be seen in the central dash which is presented like jewelry, and the seats are comfortable and remain that way even during extended journeys. The Lincoln Aviator has a sharp exterior, with a frame that sits on twenty two inch wheels that is low slung and swept back. A broad mesh grille can be seen in front with a logo that lights up, and the cabin uses a rectangular dash with high tech screens and trim that is comprised of polished wood and metal.
Technology & Safety
When it comes to safety, the Lincoln Aviator is quite impressive. Not only has it earned a 5 star NHTSA rating, but it also captured the prestigious Top Safety Pick award. Its features include standardized emergency automated brakes, blind area monitoring, cruise control, lane control and high beams which are automated. Luxuries within the cabin are extensive, especially for those who purchase the Black Label, and include keyless start, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, a twenty eight speaker Revel sound system, and powered seats that can be heated/cooled and adjusted thirty different ways.
The XC90 continues Volvo's reputation for safety excellence. It is equipped with all the newest protective countermeasures and has done well on every crash test sent its way. It has also earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award along with a five star NHTSA rating. It has all the features found in the Lincoln, including parking sensors and steering assist. Luxuries in its cabin include heated/cooled seats, a sound system from Bowers & Wilkins, perforated leather and climate control.
Performance
The Volvo XC90 can generate 400 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in less than 6 seconds. The Lincoln Aviator is equipped with a V6, dual turbo engine that can generate 400 horsepower with 415 pounds of torque. It can accelerate from zero to sixty in about 7 seconds.
The Bottom Line
While both these SUVs are nearly tied when it comes to safety and performance, the third row in the Aviator is too small and some have described its V6 engine as being too loud, which makes the Volvo XC90 the winner.
