The 2022 V40 Cross Country and the 2022 Audi Allroad are both compact, crossover utility vehicles. They're among the most popular SUVs on the market, but which one is right for you? For help with that question, we've compared the two models' specs and features side by side below.

Design & Style

  • Exterior Design

The Volvo is a bit more subdued, with its design following the classic "Volvo look" of conservative and understated. It has a very robust stance and doesn't seem to be trying too hard at all. The Audi, however, has taken a slightly more modern approach to its styling-and it works well! While the front end is still pretty similar between both vehicles (except for their respective grilles), the back fascias are quite different: The Volvo has a large spoiler on top of its rear hatch, while the Audi sports angled lights and unique taillights that make it stand out from every other SUV on the road.

  • Interior Design

The 2022 V40 Cross Country has an attractive interior design. The large center console is an eye-catching feature, and the rest of the cabin is very clean in its simplicity. The car's large multi-function display screen gives you access to all your important information at a glance, and the sound system does a great job at delivering clear sound throughout the cabin.

The 2022 Audi Allroad also has a sleek and modern interior design that emphasizes simplicity over flashiness. However, there are some areas where it falls short compared to Volvo's offering: There's no multi-function display screen here, but rather just several small screens stacked vertically on either side of the steering wheel; as well as fewer USB ports (just two) than what you'll get in your V40 Cross Country (four). And while both cars offer plenty of legroom for rear passengers-with comfortable seating for four people despite their differing sizes-the generous amount of space in front means that passengers back there won't have as much room as they do inside Volvo's latest offering.

Both vehicles have great interiors-especially compared to their contemporaries in this price range-but if we had to pick one for interior design alone, we would go with the winner: The 2022 V90 Cross Country.

Technology & Safety

Both vehicles have a wide array of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. In addition, both come standard with automatic emergency braking that can detect pedestrians as well as cars or other obstacles in front of you. One difference between them is that while the Audi will automatically brake if it detects you're about to hit something in front of you, the Volvo does not have this feature available at all-at least for now.

Performance

Looking at the engine specs for both models, it's easy to see that the 2022 V90 Cross Country is actually a bit more powerful than its rival in terms of peak output. With its turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, this Volvo produces 252 horsepower (188 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters). That's compared to just 235 horsepower (175 kilowatts) and 258 pound-feet (350 Nm), which is what you get from Audi's turbocharged 2.0-liter here.

The Allroad has an advantage when it comes to fuel economy, though: EPA estimates put its combined figure at 28 mpg combined (23 mpg city/33 mpg highway), while Volvo says its hybridized powertrain can achieve 23 mpg combined (21 city/26 highway).

The Bottom Line

The V40 Cross Country is the better choice. It's more affordable, it has a nicer interior, and you're not paying extra for faux-SUV styling. If you want something sporty with all-wheel drive that doesn't look like a lifted SUV, this car is your best bet.
