The 2022 Volkswagen Passat offers excellent value, lots of trunk space, and standardized safety features. But how does it compare to the 2022 Volvo S60, a popular car which is highly regarded for its top notch seats, performance, and hybrid plugin?

Design & Style

The Volvo S60 is a splendid sedan that has four doors with five seats. The exterior is sturdy and vigorous, with a frame that sits on eighteen inch wheels. The LED lights in front are a nice touch as are the overhangs, elongated nose and taillights. The cabin is spacious and each surface is covered in upmarket materials such as blond driftwood, leather and metallic mesh. The nine inch touch screens are simple to access and use.

The Volkswagen Passat is a very attractive automobile. The exterior is well proportioned with a slotted grille and creased hood that sits on nineteen inch aluminum wheels, while the interior is conservative with black upholstery and grained plastic in some cases, and while it has wooden surfaces, it is artificial rather than genuine.

Technology & Safety

The Volkswagen Passat received a good rating for its crash test performance, while the NHTSA gave it a five star rating. It now has cruise control that is adaptive along with blind area monitoring, emergency automated brakes and notifications for cross traffic in the rear. It also has systems which can automatically deactivate its fuel pump, turn on its hazard lights or unlock doors as needed.  Cabin perks include a USB port, Fender sound, six inch touchscreens, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Not only has the Volvo S60 captured the distinguished Top Safety Pick award, but it also received a five star NHTSA rating. It has all of the safety countermeasures found in the Passat, including headlights which are adaptive, driver assistance and a camera with surround view. Luxuries within its cabin include audio from Harman Kardon, nine inch touchscreens, the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and driftwood trim.

The Volvo S60 T5 comes with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine which can generate 250 horsepower, that allows it to blaze from zero to sixty in just six seconds. The Volkswagen Passat is also outfitted with a turbo 4 engine that is 2 liter, but it can only generate 174 horsepower with 206 pounds of torque.

The Bottom Line

The Volvo completely outclasses the Volkswagen Passat in every way. It has larger touchscreens, a more powerful engine, and the wood trim used in its cabin is actually real, making the S60 the uncontested winner.
