The 2022 Volvo XC40 is an impressive small luxury crossover. Just like any other Volvo, it is loaded with technology and is able to deliver a fun drive. It is more directed towards a youthful audience which is why its handsome looks help in making it a strong contender in its class.

Perhaps the most striking feature of the 2022 Lexus UX 200 is having an edgy style. When it comes to features, however, it can never compare against most compact luxury crossovers like the XC40.

Design & Style

The XC40 is different from the usual shapes of other Volvo SUVs. It is bolder and more urbane with its boxy proportions. It is also able to pull off having eye-catching hues. The concave grille and headlights that intersect on the hood line gives an illusion of being wider. The bold styling extends to the cabin with a horizontal theme and an option to have the glorious Lava Orange carpet.

The exterior of the UX 200 is dotted with the brand's bold styling. It has the spindle grille and lightning headlights that are also mirrored at the rear. Although it looks eye-catching outside, the cabin does not stand out which is kind of disappointing.

Technology & Safety

An intuitive infotainment system is fitted on the XC40. There are less buttons and most of the features seamlessly work using the touchscreen controls. You can expect a lot of advanced driver-assistance features that comes standard, like the automated emergency braking system.

The infotainment stack on the UX 200 looks great but the user interface on its touchscreen display is frustrating to use. It is better to use the voice controls but you really need to spend time to master how it works. Even the safety features lack refinement and are always twitchy to use.

Performance

There are two powertrains available for the XC40 and both are excellent at holding it down through twisty roads. The three trim levels are respectably equipped, delivering an output that vary from 187-hp to 258 hp.  It is stable but also delivers a playful performance. It exhibits a supple ride with its stiffer suspension that has been enhanced to promote a more agile drive.

There are three trim levels for the UX 200 with the base at 169 hp from its 2.0-liter engine. It is undeniably slow to accelerate and lacks enough road feedback.

The Bottom Line

It cannot be denied that compared to the 2022 Volvo XC40, the 2022 Lexus UX 200 significantly lacks the refinements of a compact luxury vehicle. The UX 200 looks fine but everything crumbled with its unsophisticated cabin and mediocre features. The XC40 stands out because of the perfect blend of beauty, practicality and performance.
