The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is a tough and rugged SUV that offers capable performance with an old school feel. But can it compete against the 2022 Volvo XC40, an SUV which has received exaltation for its style, powertrains and fully electric variant?

Design & Style

The Volvo XC40 is distinctive for its minimal footprint, which makes it the vehicle of choice for metro areas which are short on parking space. Yet the cabin space has not been sacrificed, and offers enough room to comfortably seat five. The dash is upright with a nine inch display that is conveniently positioned for passengers that need to use their smartphone. The black and beige upholstery looks fabulous, but those who are looking for something truly special should get the Oxide Red trim.

Visually, the Toyota 4Runner is robust and masculine. The exterior is covered in hard, angular lines with a frame that has been elevated. Within the cabin, the 4Runner has not yet fully transitioned to digital display controls, and still uses classical knobs and buttons (its LCD display is primarily used to control the interior climate).

Technology & Safety

The Toyota 4Runner is well equipped with active safety measures. These include cruise control that is adaptive, automated emergency brakes, rollover protection and multiple airbags. It has received a 4 star rating from federal testing agencies but its ability to prevent rollovers was less than impressive at only three stars. Luxuries within its cabin include eight inch displays, smartphone compatibility, rear locking differential and hardware for off-road driving.

The Volvo XC40 has an extensive array of collision prevention technology. In addition to having all the features found in the Toyota, it also has distinct gadgets such as LEDs which will dim automatically whenever traffic is detected, and they will also bend inside corners. This has resulted in it receiving the Top Safety Pick award and a five star NHTSA rating. Its cabin perks include an audio system from Harman Kardon, panoramic moonroof, parking sensors, navigation and driftwood inlays.

Performance

Those that purchase the Volvo XC40 T5 will get a turbo 4 engine that can generate 248 horsepower with all-wheel drive that is wedded to an automatic eight speed gearbox. The Toyota 4Runner answers with a V6 engine that can generate 270 horsepower with 278 pounds of torque.

The Bottom Line

While the Toyota 4Runner has a powerful engine, its safety is totally lackluster when compared to the Volvo, and this combined with its aging interior, lack of luxury features and poor fuel economy makes the XC40 the winner.
