The Volvo XC60 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class are both attractive, family-oriented luxury SUVs. But which one is best? We look at each model's stats to find out which vehicle is more likely to meet your needs.
Design & Style
- Exterior Design
The Volvo XC60 has a more stylish design. It has sharper creases and a nicer grille, but it still retains a sense of simplicity. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class has a more luxurious design. Its lines are softer, with an air of wealth apparent from the moment you see it in person. The Volvo XC60 is the more modern overall, but the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is also quite modern in its way-and it looks better if you want something with more class and style than tech and practicality.
- Interior Design
One of the biggest differences between the 2022 Volvo XC60 and the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is their respective interiors. While both cars have a solid range of options, they can be divided into two categories: modern and traditional.
The Volvo XC60 has an interior design reminiscent of its Swedish origins, with clean lines, bright colors, and modern accents like fabric seats that are easy to clean. The dashboard features an intuitive touchscreen interface for controlling your car's settings-and it even includes Apple CarPlay compatibility (but no Android Auto).
In contrast with this sleekness is the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class' outdated interior design; based on its exterior styling alone, you might think its cabin would be equally dated-but it doesn't look much different from models from just two years ago. Its infotainment system is clunky compared to what you'll find in other luxury SUVs. However, there are still some nice touches like heated/cooled cup holders and ambient lighting inside every seatback pocket (including those reserved for rear passengers).
Technology & Safety
The Volvo XC60 has higher standard safety features than the GLC-Class. The XC60's optional Driver Assistance Package includes a blind spot information system, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. These features are not available on the GLC-Class.
The XC60 received 5 stars overall from NHTSA and 4 stars in every individual test category with exception of rollover resistance (which it received 3 stars). The GLC-Class scored 4 or 5 stars across all categories except rollover risk, where it was rated 3 stars.
Performance
The 2022 Volvo XC60 has a more powerful engine than the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. The Volvo XC60's 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder produces 250 horses while the Mercedes-Benz GLC's 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder produces 241 ponies. The Volvo XC60's 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder is also more efficient than the Mercedes-Benz GLC's 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder, with a fuel efficiency rating of 18 combined MPG vs 15 combined MPG for the Mercedes-Benz GLC's 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder (the best of any vehicle in this class). And drive your car mostly in city conditions. It might be worth noting that when considering an SUV from these brands, its EPA estimates are better than those of competing SUVs by over 8 mpg on average; meaning you'll spend less time at gas stations and more time enjoying life!
The Bottom Line
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is a great vehicle, but it's not quite as good as the 2022 Volvo XC60. The Volvo has more cargo space and safety features but costs more than the Benz. If you're looking for an affordable SUV with lots of room for passengers and cargo-especially if you want a feature-rich vehicle-go with the GLC-Class. But if you want something equally well equipped but less expensive and better suited to families with young children, go with the XC60.
