There are many reasons to install a new Volvo car battery, the most common of which is when it has become discharged. Note that all batteries need to be replaced eventually because of their limited service life. That will depend on how often the key is being used.
When to Install a New Battery
There are certain signs that dictate the battery need to be replaced. Here is a list to take note of:
- Symbol Key Not Found. The driver display might show the message "car Key battery low" or the information symbol illuminates. Take this as an indicator it is time to install a new one.
- Locks Do Not React to Signals. Car keys are basically used to lock or unlock the vehicle. When the locks do not respond to the remote control within the required range, commonly 20 meters away from the car, then you can take that as a sign that the car key battery needs replacement. You can make another unlock attempt by moving closer to the car though.
Things to Remember When Installing A New Volvo Car Battery
Note that the battery found in the buttonless key, also known as Key Tag, is irreplaceable. When this is the case, you need to contact an authorized Volvo service center to order a new key. Likewise, a discharged Key Tag must be sent to an authorized center. Make sure that the key is deleted from the car, to prevent possible use while doing a back-up start.
Removing the Battery
Hold the remote control such that the Volvo logo is facing the right way. From there, locate the button at the bottom edge and slide it to the right. The front side shell should also slide upwards by a few millimeters. Turn the key to the other side then move the button to the side while also sliding the back shell upwards. Using a screwdriver, you can turn the battery cover counter clockwise, making sure that the word "OPEN" shows. Lift the battery cover carefully, prying it upwards.
You are now ready to remove the battery. The (+) side must face upwards, and then you can carefully pry the battery. Make sure your hands do not come in contact with the new batteries or any of its contact surfaces so as not to impair proper functioning later.
Replacing the Battery
Install the new battery with the (+) side up, making sure that the battery is placed in the holder with the edge down. Slide the battery forward, such that it will be fastened with the two plastic catches. Press the battery further down, fastening it under the upper black plastic catch.
Replace the cover by refitting it and turning clockwise until it is aligned with the word "CLOSE". Reposition the shell, and press it until you hear a clicking sound. Slide the shell back after. Turn the remote key over and refit the front side accordingly.
