Wiper blades are essential mechanisms included in any vehicle. They primarily help when sweeping water away from the windscreen. They work with the washer fluid in cleaning the windscreen so that the driver will have a clearer vision of the terrain he is driving at. With this function, there will come a time that your Volvo wiper blades may wear out and need replacement. Here is what you can do in this regard.
Replacing Wiper Blades: When to Do So
Wiper blades may not be as expensive as other car components. This is the same reason why replacing them is often overlooked. Note that worn out wiper blades can compromise overall safety, especially under extreme weather conditions. They may slow down, but that will not stop you from using them. Take the following as a sign to replace them:
- They are already six months old.
- They leave behind residue, dirt or water on the windshield.
- They are making screeching noises or wobbly movements
Replacing Your Volvo Wiper Blades
Unlike replacing car batteries, or performing oil changes on your Volvo vehicle, replacing wiper blades is a less complicated task. In fact, you can perform it anywhere, as long as you have your tools ready. The wiper arm is usually tucked under the hood's edge in order to prevent you from pulling it away from your vehicle. In this case, installing a new one can be challenging.
- You can make the process easier by turning the ignition on then run your wipers after. While the blades are sweeping across your windshield, you can turn the ignition off. Notice that the blades stop at the middle. Now, it will be easier to pull the wiper arms vertically away from the windshield. This allows easier access to the wiper blades as well.
- Locate the release button or tab. This is usually found where the blade meets the arm. Press that button and release it. When done, you can now gently pull the wiper blade away. Most Volvo wiper arms come with a hook-shaped mechanism so that the wiper blades won't run loose while they are being used. The more modern vehicles have simpler adapter systems, though.
- Slide the new blade as far as it goes, until you hear an audible click sound. Close the release tab if necessary. Place the wiper blade back down onto the windshield. Turn your ignition once more and return the wiper to its original off position.
