Oil change happens to every vehicle, every now and then. It can be quite costly going to the service center to have the procedure done. Nonetheless, it is still the best option you have. However, you can always try to do things on your own. Through this guide, you will learn how to perform Volvo engine oil change on your own.

Prepare What You Need

You will basically need extended performance high mileage full synthetic motor oil, about five quarts. You also need an oil filter for Volvo. Make sure you verify the oil grade, capacity, and type on your owner's manual. Other things you will need are:

  • Drain pan
  • Jack stands
  • Oil filter pliers
  • Oil funnel
  • Ramps
  • Ratchet

Prepare Your Car

Drive your car up the ramp, making sure the rear wheels are blocked to avoid any accidental movement while performing the oil change. Apply the emergency brakes while the car is in park mode. Use jack stands to secure the vehicle. Place it under the lifting points. Pull the hood release that you will find under the dash to open the car's hood.

Perform the Oil Change

Start by locating the oil filter cap which can be found on top of the engine. You can find the recommended oil grade on the cap. Rotate the cap on a counter-clockwise motion to remove it. Remove the splash shield, if your Volvo has any. This is usually secured with 10 mm bolts. Once you have located the 13 mm oil drain plug, you can now position the drain pan below it. The drain plug must likewise be turned counterclockwise in order to remove it.

Draining the Oil

Now you are ready to locate the engine's oil filter. Using your oil filter pliers, you can easily remove the oil filter. Apply oil to the oil filter gasket ring. Just a small amount will do. Prepare to torque the filter to 25 Nm. Locate the copper ring found on the oil drain plug then replace it. Once all the oil has been drained, you can reinstall the oil drain plug, then make sure it is torqued to 35 Nm.

Replacing the Oil

Locate the oil filter hole then add five liters of oil into it. Make sure that the engine will not be overfilled with oil. Wait for several minutes then check the oil level with a dipstick. Add more oil as necessary, making sure that its level is just between the Min and Max marks written on the dipstick. When you are done, you can replace the oil filter cap, and make sure that there are no tools left inside the engine bay.

Checking Your Car

Right after an oil change, you should make sure that the engine is working just fine. You can do this by starting the engine, paying close attention to the oil pressure light. That must go off within five seconds. Turn off the engine, then recheck the oil level after five minutes. Add oil if you find out that its level is low. Inspect for any oil leaks within the next couple of days.
