Volvo headlights will need replacement in time, and when this happens at the most unexpected time and place, it pays knowing how to do it with your own hands. A series of steps must be brought to mind when doing so. Here are important things to take note of.

Removing the Rectangular Headlight Cover

This is the first step to access the headlight bulbs and be able to replace them later. There is a plastic covering found over the headlight, and this must be removed first before removing the rectangular cover. Locate the four screws, and using a Torx tool, undo these screws in three to four turns. Be careful not to undo them completely. Push the cover then remove them. Reverse these steps when replacing the cover back.

Removing the Plastic Cover

In this process, you simply need to begin by lifting the rubber strip. You can do that by pressing the strip inward to the engine compartment. Release the pins found on the cover's four clips by using a screwdriver when pressing them down. The cover will be removed after.

Replacing Halogen Bulbs in the Headlights

Some Volvo models carry halogen headlights, and when the one you own uses one, it is best to contact an authorized Volvo dealer to make the replacement. You can do the replacement of the bulbs though by simply following the steps below:

  • Remove the plastic covering as per steps provided above.
  • Once the round rubber cover on the headlight has been removed, you can access the low beam lights.
  • Once the rectangular headlight cover has been removed, you can now access high beam, daytime running lights, turn signal bulbs and parking lights.

Replacing High Beam Headlight Bulbs

If you are to replace the high beam headlights, make sure that the rectangular headlight cover is removed. This will allow easy replacement of the lamp. The plastic cover must be removed in order to replace the bulbs, too.

When making replacements, make sure that you do not touch the bulb glass with your bare hands. Any oil or grease that your hand has touched will vaporize in the heat, and may eventually leave dirt or deposit over the reflector, and can cause damage later.

Once you have made sure of that, you can now remove the old bulb, with the bulb holder turned upward before pulling the bulb out. Pry the plastic sleeve located at the connector's locking lug, then remove the connector. Replace the bulb thereafter by positioning it in the socket, turning downward.

Replacing Low Beam Headlight Bulbs

Start by removing the round low beam rubber cover then remove the connector from the bulb. Press the bulb slightly upward to remove it. Insert the new bulb, making sure that the guiding pin points straight up. Press the connector then put the round rubber cover back.
